Interpreting Rules and Consequences ( or “Durn Smarty Pants-young’uns!”)

“If you told her not to pull on the plant in the living room because you didn’t want it to fall on her, or simply didn’t want it shredded to bits, you might recall that she stopped. For a second. And then she looked right at you and grabbed the plant again. “You gonna stop me?” that look said. “Isn’t this the limit? Isn’t this what you just told me not to do? So what are you going to do about it?”

That, in a nutshell, is exactly how kids ask for limits and challenge you to enforce them.”
